Matrescence Coaching

Becoming a mother is a transformative journey that brings both joy and challenges. As a Matrescence Coach I am here to support you through this unique and incredible transformation. Matrescence, the process of becoming a mother, deserves recognition and dedicated attention, as this new identity will impact relationships and experiences in all other facets of life.

How do I know? I’m a mum too! Through my own experience of matrescence, and in working with mothers over many years, I have seen and experienced the full range of emotions that can be experienced in the day-to-day work of mothering our children. Whether that be anger, frustration, guilt, joy, worry, excitement, grief, anxiety, overwhelming love and overwhelming sadness, I’ve seen it all.

For me, that has meant:

  • the practicalities of raising my boys an ocean away from my family, and with a fairly small community around me at the start
  • sharing parenting of our infants with a husband who at times travelled away up to two weeks at a time
  • loss of my own parents whilst my children were young, and learning to parent through grief
  • getting to grips with the changing needs of my children, and balancing the different stages, of toddlers, adolescents, teenager and young adults

I understand that each mother’s experience is deeply personal and ever-evolving. That being said, there are some common themes which mothers face and my training has included exploring some of the themes and theories which explain these universal themes. Whether you’re a new mum trying to find your footing or an experienced mother going through a transition, my goal is to help you embrace this  season with confidence and resilience. Together, we can navigate with compassion, understanding, and guidance.

The exercises I bring, and theories I share, come from some really special courses I’ve attended over the years. My first coaching training was actually in the context of supporting infant sleep (Holistic Sleep Coaching, with Lyndsey Hookway, IBCLC), a role close to my heart as the mother of a first born who stole my sleep for two years. This course focused on the importance of looking holistically at any challenge, and I believe is important in all facets of life. Nothing happens in a vacuum and one aspect of our lives affects all others.

Through other participants on that course I discovered the work of sociologist Sophie Brock, PhD. I completed her Motherhood Studies Practitioner certification, a deep dive into the ways living in our current society affects our experience of mothering and motherhood, and why this will vary from person to person depending on their unique circumstances.

Next I completed Mama Rising Facilitator training with Amy Taylor-Kabbaz, a matrescence activist based in Australia. At the core of this training was a programme of self-exploration of the experience of motherhood which forms much of the basis of my framework today. Having completed the process myself, I understand how transformative such work can be.

How we can work together:

  1. One-off calls to explore a particular topic or issue. These might be to explore a specific practical issue to do with infant care, such as sleep, or a concern you are grappling with yourself. You are welcome to book a session as a taster if you’re wondering whether a longer support package might suit you.
  2. Matrescence coaching – a container of support lasting three or six months. Between live calls we will stay in touch via text or voice note support, allowing for regular check-ins and connection.
  3. Group coaching programmes. Contact me to join the waitlist for the next round.
